It depends on age, fault and running costs — so we quote it honestly, both ways when it's borderline. A worn pump seal is a repair; a ten-year-old single-speed pump with a failing motor is usually better replaced with a variable-speed unit that costs far less to run. Either way, you'll see the reasoning and the numbers before deciding.

A screech or grind is most commonly worn motor bearings. A rattling or gravel-like sound is often cavitation, where the pump is starving for water because of a suction blockage or air leak. Both are very fixable when caught early, and both will destroy the pump if ignored, so it's worth getting looked at promptly.
